Kevin and I went to Disneyland for our honeymoon, and while visiting California Adventure we came upon the cutest little toy store, of course there were the typical Mickeys and Minnies and Pixar inspired toys to choose from, but the one thing we couldn't resist purchasing was a potato head complete with unique Disney parts and pieces. In the very center of the store there was a giant bin with various potato head accessories and also a small cardboard box that you could put your potato body /parts and accessories into for only $20. The challenge was on and we started digging through the bin until our little cardboard box was bursting. We found some really cute things too: glass slippers with painted Minnie toes, Classic yellow Mickey shoes, a Mickey groom top hat, and Minne bridal veil. When we got home, we were able to find another potato head body, thanks for to my mom's keen thrift store senses, and we had an adorable little 'Tater Couple: Bride & Groom. It was a cute addition to the decorations in our apartment and a fun reminder of our time at Disneyland. So, that's where it all began. . .
A year later I decided to continue the "Tater Tradition" and I gave Kevin an "Optimash Prime" ( Optimus Prime from Transformers ) for our anniversary and our collection just took off. Whenever we visited a thrift store we were on the hunt for potato head parts and accessories. We had such a collection that last year that we put up a little display of our dressed up taters in honor of Halloween. Since then we have stumbled upon a completed "Darth Tater" ( Darth Vader) at a thrift store, and just this year I bought an "Easter Bunny" and my mom just bought us the "Trick or Tater", "Santa Spud", and "Sweetheart Spud". Thanks Mom! They are so much fun!
It's all really kind of ironic, here we are in potato country, collecting potato heads, and displaying them for the holidays. But it has been such a fun tradition, and I love that it's a way for us to connect with our inner child together. So, last night we decided ( better late than never ) to get in gear and do some decorating for Halloween and put together this years Halloween line up! We laughed so hard about all the silly little faces and combinations of taters we could make, flipping eyes upside down or turning moustaches into bushy eyebrows. We even let another vegetable sneak into the line up this year : Larry the Cucumber in his Pirates who don't do anything garb.
*** Happy Halloween everyone! Don't eat too much candy! ***
I love that you've always embraced your inner child. I'm glad you've found a mate to embrace it with you, tator traditions and all:)
